Wheeling University Lands 102 Athletes on Winter/Spring Academic All-MEC List
Wheeling, W.Va., June 16 – Following a successful winter and spring sports season that saw the Cardinals make four different MEC Tournament runs, the success continued in the classroom. On Monday, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released its annual Academic Awards. The first of the two awards announced was the Academic All-MEC list, with Wheeling University Athletics having 102 athletes honored, the second most in the conference.
In order to qualify for the Academic All-MEC list, a student-athlete must earn a grade point average between 3.70 and 4.00 during their team’s championship season. There were a total of 13 winter and spring sports that were recognized across the conference’s 12 member institutions. In total 902 athletes earned the distinction of Academic All-MEC, with each member institution providing information for the list. Leading the conference was Frostburg State with 109 honorees in the Academic All-MEC class, with Wheeling sitting right behind them at 102. Rounding out the top three for the conference was West Virginia Wesleyan, who had 91 athletes honored.
The Wheeling winter and spring sports were led by a big semester in the classroom from Wheeling Baseball, who had 19 honorees on the list. Finishing right behind Baseball was the department’s newest program, Acrobatics & Tumbling, with 16 and Softball with 14. All 11 of the University’s winter and spring sports were honored on the list as Women’s Lacrosse (11), Men’s Basketball (6), Men’s Swimming (6), Women’s Swimming (6), Wrestling (6), Men’s Track (3), and Women’s Track (2) rounding out the field.
