Commencement Speech from Cameron Zinn, Co-Valedictorian
Good morning distinguished faculty, family, friends, and most importantly, my fellow graduates of Wheeling University Class of 2026.
Standing here today, speaking to all of you is an incredible honor and responsibility. When I first stepped onto campus four years ago, I had no idea the impact this university would have on me and the relationships that I would create. Each of us arrived here with different dreams, different goals, and different paths ahead. Yet through every challenge and moment of doubt, we have all found our way to this day and shared accomplishment.
Wheeling University is so much more than just a place where we earned a degree, it is a Catholic institution deeply rooted in faith that emphasizes a mission of life, leadership, and service with and among others. Here, we are not only encouraged to grow intellectually, but also reflect on who we are and who we are called to become. We are reminded that success is not measured solely by achievement, but by how we use our gifts to serve and help others.
During my time in the Wheeling University nursing program, I encountered this in a very real and personal way. Through invaluable experiences, I learned lessons that cannot be found in a textbook. I realized you never truly understand the battles that someone else may be facing. Behind every patient and person, is a story that we may not comprehend. Understanding this, taught me to look deeper, and to lead with care and empathy. Because beyond our careers and accomplishments, what will define us most is how we treat and serve others.
Rooted in the Catholic faith, we are reminded of this calling in the scripture. Matthew 25:40 states, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” This verse calls us to recognize Christ in every person we encounter and reminds us that in serving others with compassion and dignity, we are serving Him directly. While that lesson came to me through nursing, it is not limited to healthcare. Whether we studied business, education, science, or the arts, each of us has been shaped by the same foundation this university has given us and by the people who have supported us along the way.
On behalf of all graduates, thank you to our families and friends. We would not be here today without your sacrifices, encouragement, and constant support. You stood by us through every high and low, and this accomplishment is just as much yours as it is ours.
To our professors: thank you for challenging us, guiding us, and believing in us throughout this journey. I would especially like to recognize the nursing faculty for their dedication, patience, and commitment to shaping us into the professionals we are becoming, along with Chair of Nursing Jill Emery and to President Dr. Vargo for your leadership and support of this university.
And to my fellow graduates: as each of you move forward into your next chapters, I encourage you to carry the values you have learned here into whatever path you choose. In your profession, strive to make a difference in any way you can. Stay grounded in your purpose, trust in your abilities, and remember that God is with you every step of the way.
Congratulations, Class of 2026. We did it and this is just the beginning!
Thank You!
