Update from the President | December 3, 2021

Dear Wheeling University Community,

I am proud and grateful to everyone who supported our first Cardinal Day of Giving. Thanks to your incredible generosity, this community came together as one to help us meet and exceed our goal to raise $40,000. This Wheeling family joined together and met the challenge to no one’s surprise. As of today – when we closed the giving portal – this FAMILY raised $64,432. We received donations from alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends – and these gifts will directly benefit our students and programs. As the staff entered in the donations, they found one donor who had not made a gift since 1997 and decided to begin giving each month. We also had one benefactor, who makes monthly donations make a significant, additional gift on Tuesday. We also had donors make gifts in honor/memory of children, Jesuits, classmates, and loved ones. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the donors who provided the matching gift funds – their gifts were tremendously impactful. Our Cardinal Day of Giving illustrates that each gift can make a difference in the lives of our students and shows that by working together, WE can help Wheeling University rise to new heights! Thanks again to everyone who helped make our first Cardinal Day of Giving a success!  A special thank you to Kelly Klubert and Adwit Lamichhane for their hard work that made this happen. The planning, creative development, videos, photos, and statements that the two put together were outstanding.

Our campus will be home to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Volleyball Tournament this weekend, and our Cardinals are the number one seed. The University is happy to be the host for the regional tournament once again. The Cardinals beat Edinboro 3-1 this evening! They move on to the 2021 NCAA Atlantic Region Championship game against Gannon Knights tomorrow at 7:30 pm. If you cannot make it to the game, you can watch the action on the Tournament Central Page. Best of luck to Coach Christy Benner and our Lady Cards!

Our outstanding members of the Volleyball team continue to collect post-season awards. Wednesday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its All-Region team, with Senior Audrey Francis named the Atlantic Region Player of the Year! First -Team honorees included Lexi Reinert and Karly Niesen. Freshman Mady Winters made the All-Region Honorable Mention team. Additionally, the Conference Commissioner’s Association (CCA) Division II All-Region Teams were announced, and Audrey was named a CCA All-Region First Team Honoree, while Niesen made the CCA All-Region Second team. Congratulations on your stellar season and accolades. I am, as always, so very proud of you.

Students can once again take classes during the Christmas break. Wintermester classes run from Monday, December 13, to January 10. We are offering eight courses in several different programs, and students can visit the Self Service Portal to see a list of classes being offered and register. You’re also able to register for Wintermester classes in person by visiting the Registrar’s Office. Tuition is $400 per credit hour, with discounts available to students taking multiple courses. Before registering, students should consult their academic advisor to ensure the course they wish to take is part of their four-year plan. This is a wonderful chance to get ahead academically during winter break.

As we approach Christmas break, the University will offer our students shuttles to the Pittsburgh Airport, who plans to fly home for the holidays. Any student needing a ride to the airport should contact the Student Services Office at 304-243-2350 or stop by the office in Acker 302. Additionally, to help our students cope with the stress of finals, Campus Activities will offer Puppy Therapy from noon to 2 pm, Tuesday, December 7. So, stop by the 24-Hour Lounge in Swint Hall and relax with some of God’s creatures! I can also share, we will have a special guest attending Puppy Therapy as Cooper, our favorite Swim Team Mascot, is excited to visit.

Earlier today, I was honored to have the Most Rev. Mark Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, preside over a Mass where I was officially installed as the 13th President of this University. His personal investment in our community is especially meaningful to me, and I was proud to have this wonderful man conduct the ceremony. Also, I was honored that alumni, employees, students, family, friends, delegates, and dignitaries – near and far – were present for this special day. I am humbled by the faith Bishop Brennan and the members of the Board of Trustees have placed in me. I am beyond blessed to be given the mission to lead this magnificent place. I look forward to continuing to work to move our mission forward, guided by our catholic faith to work together, serving one another and the Lord to make the world a better place.

With my deepest gratitude,

Ginny R. Favede, President
Wheeling University
