Update from the President | April 9, 2021

Dear Cardinal Community,

This week, I was witness to the outstanding research work our students have undertaken this academic year. Wednesday, undergraduates presented their scholarly work at this year’s Student Research and Scholarship Symposium held in Troy Theater. During the afternoon, undergraduate students from a variety of majors displayed research posters and gave oral presentations. That evening, students and faculty from exercise science, physical therapy, and nursing were joined by campus representatives and community partners for the annual Inter-Professional Education (IPE) event. The students, faculty, staff, and community members worked through a paper case in small inter-professional groups learning the skills necessary to work collaboratively to better treat patients. This exercise helps students learn how to work with those outside their area of expertise, which will benefit them professionally when they graduate. The research presented by our students was truly outstanding, giving me an even greater appreciation of the amazing work our students and faculty do at this University.

Wheeling University students now have the ability to better prepare for graduate schools at a discounted rate. Through a partnership with the Appalachian College Association, Wheeling students can take part in test prep for the following exams: MCAT; DAT; OAT; PCAT; GRE; LSAT; and GMAT. The prep courses include live instruction, books, online resources, and tools to help students prepare for the admissions test. Visit www.kaptest.com to view the full suite of resources and test schedules. Students planning to take any of the test prep classes should enroll through the ACA website to receive discounted pricing. The deadline to register is May 20th. Please contact Paula Lestini in the Hodges Library for further details.

Thanks to the federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II), Wheeling will have the opportunity to provide relief for students coping with the ongoing financial ramifications of the pandemic. Funding is available to be used by impacted students to cover any component of the student’s cost of attendance or emergency costs that arise due to COVID-19, such as tuition, food, housing, healthcare (including mental health), or childcare. Federal regulations require that we prioritize aid to students with extreme need, such as students who receive federal Pell grants; however, you do not have to receive a Pell grant to be eligible for support. Students can elect to have funds applied to their student account balance or request a check. Students must complete this form in order to be considered for HEERF II funding.

Please contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@wheeling.edu or 304-243-2304 if you have questions.

The Office of Student Services, along with our partner Aladdin Food Services, is excited to announce our traditional “Late Night Breakfast” on Monday, April 26th, 8:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.  This time-honored tradition wouldn’t be possible without help from our faculty, staff, and volunteers. Student Services encourages you to come and cheer on our hard-working students and join us in the dining room to show your support. Please email Christie Nieman at cnieman@wheeling.edu to reserve your spot.  The entire Student Services Team is looking forward to seeing you in the Benedum Room on Monday!

Wheeling University is planning campus beautification day in April and in keeping with Pope Francis’ encyclical we will call this day – Laudato Si Care for Our Common Home. In his writing, the Pope calls on us to care for creation that extends back to the Book of Genesis when humankind was called to ‘till and keep’ the Earth. Our beautification day will be a chance for all members of the campus to join as a community to live our mission of service to others by making an impact right here at HOME. More details about this day will be announced soon.

Congratulations to the Cardinal Football Team which captured its first-ever win against West Liberty last Saturday. We wish Coach Burney and the team much luck tomorrow when they play Notre Dame College.

The greatest of all liturgical seasons, Easter is a time to rest in “the joy of glorified life and the victory over death, expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of the Christian: Alleluia!” Easter does not end with Easter Sunday—it is only the beginning of the Easter season. May we continue to pray that the Holy Spirit lifts us up and fills us with strength as we navigate through the final days of the academic year.

With prayers and gratitude,

Ginny R. Favede, President
Wheeling University
