Cindy Albert ’80 Set for Induction to Wheeling Central Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame

WHEELING, W.Va., August 12 – Cindy Albert, who one of the pioneers of women’s basketball at then Wheeling College, will be inducted in the Wheeling Central Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame this September.

A four-year member of the Maroon Knights basketball squad, Albert became the first female athlete from Wheeling Central to earn a four-year athletic/academic scholarship at the collegiate level. She joined the Cardinals women’s hoop team in the Fall of 1976, which was just the team’s second year of existence

Albert went on to enjoy a fine four-year basketball and academic career with the Cardinals. She graduated from her hometown college in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. As a senior, Albert served as co-captain of the Cardinals.

Prior to her four years at Wheeling, Albert wasn’t just part of Wheeling Central’s basketball legacy–she helped build it.

She played during a time when Title IX just took effect, and opportunities for female athletes were still being shaped. But Albert didn’t wait for doors to open–she pushed through them via her talent, determination and heart.

On the basketball court, she was known for her leadership and competitiveness. Off the court, she was a model of character and drive. And while the stats and accolades are worth celebrating, her story didn’t stop there.

She graduated Wheeling College in 1980 with a B.S. degree in business and later earned her MBA from Wheeling Jesuit.

After her successful college tenure, Albert dedicated her life to service. In 2024, she retired as Administrator for the Congregation of St. Joseph in Wheeling, a role that speaks to her strength, compassion and deep faith. Even in retirement, she doesn’t slow down–she’s running 5Ks and volunteering her time with community organizations – most recently serving as a volunteer at the University’s auxiliary gym that is providing support to local victims impacted by flooding in June.

Her life is a testimony to her alma mater’s mission to be a person for life, leadership and service to others. Albert’s Hall of Fame induction isn’t just a recognition of past achievements–it’s a celebration of a legacy that continues to grow.

Prior to her role at the Congregation of St. Joseph, Albert worked 13 years as office manager for her father’s local electrical contracting company.

NOTE: The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is for 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27th in the Wheeling CCHS Great Hall. Albert, along with others to be inducted into the Wheeling Central HOF, will be recognized at halftime of the Maroon Knights vs. Perry football game at Wheeling University’s Bishop Schmitt Field on Friday, Sept. 26th. The game starts at 7 p.m.
