“Is Capitalism Good for the Poor?” A public lecture by Gary Wolfram, the William E. Simon Professor of Economics and Public Policy and Director of Economics and Political Economy at Hillsdale College, will be held on April 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Wheeling Jesuit University’s Hawk Auditorium (G10), in the Acker Science Center.
Wolfram, a renowned economist, obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and has taught at several colleges and universities including Mount Holyoke College, The University of Michigan, and Washington State University. Throughout his career he has written several notable publications, including his most recent book “A Capitalist Manifesto: Understanding the Market Economy and Defending Liberty.” Wolfram’s public policy experience spans from serving as a Chief of Staff, Senior Economist, and Deputy State Treasurer for Taxation and Economic Policy across multiple levels of government. Today, as president of Hillsdale Policy Group, Dr. Wolfram is a consultant specializing in taxation and policy analysis.
In his lecture “Is Capitalism Good for the Poor?” Wolfram will discuss several points including the definition of capitalism as system of voluntary exchange, property rights and rule of law, why capitalism is the most efficient system for satisfying consumer demand, why any system of central planning cannot solve the problem of how to provide an incentive to innovate or information that is decentralized, as well as how and why the poor benefit from the capitalist system.
