Student Research Will Be Presented During 2025 Wheeling University Research Symposium
WHEELING, W.Va., April 9 – Wheeling University students from various academic programs will present original scholarly work during the institutions annual Student Research and Scholarship Symposium Thursday, April 10.
More than 60 oral and poster projects will be presented by undergraduate students throughout the day. For more than 20 years, Wheeling University students have been conducting research and presenting their findings to faculty and peers during this annual Spring event.
“Faculty provide students with opportunities throughout their four years to conduct research on topics related to their majors. Providing research opportunities enhances the educational experience for our students. Conducting research and presenting those findings also give our students valuable skills that they can use as they pursue a career or graduate degree,” said Dr. Sarah Pettit, assistant professor of Exercise Science and chairs of the 2025 Research Day Committee.
Research projects that will be presented this year will include students from: Athletic Training, Biology, Communications, Chemistry, Engineering, Exercise Science, the Liberal Arts and Psychology.
Student poster presentations will be on display in the Acker Science Center First Floor Lounge from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oral research presentations will begin at 1 p.m. in classrooms throughout Acker Science Center. The research conducted by the students include individual projects and group collaborations.
“For a university the size of Wheeling, it is uncommon for students to have the opportunity to participate in research throughout their undergraduate experience. Faculty at Wheeling University work hand-in-hand with their students on topics that are related to their majors. This active learning model enhances learning for both students and faculty,” Pettit added.
She noted that many colleges and universities do not offer freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to conduct research – this is what sets Wheeling University apart from many other institutions.
Serving on the Research Day Committee are; Pettit, Teresa Busick, instructor of Psychology, Susan Hvizdos, instructor of Mathematics, Heather Kiblinger, instructor of Nursing, and William ‘Butch’ Maxwell, instructor of Communications.
