Wheeling University April Update

Dear Wheeling University Community,

The inaugural State of the University Red and Gold Luncheon was held on April 11 in Troy Theater. Business leaders, civic leaders, alumni, and friends attended. Board Chair David Hendrickson provided an update about the current state of the University and outlined its direction for the future. Dr. Vargo provided an overview of academic programs, campus activities, and achievements. Peyton Hores, junior Business Major, also shared the student experience. The Most Rev. Mark E. Brennan, Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston Diocese, reaffirmed his heartfelt support of the University.

Academics

Research Day was held on April 10. Students from Athletic Training, Biology, Communications, Chemistry, Engineering, Exercise Science, Liberal Arts, and Psychology presented their scholarly work. During the morning session, research posters were displayed.  Students gave oral presentations throughout the afternoon. More than 60 students presented research projects.

The 2025 Honors Convocation was held on April 24. Students were recognized for their academic achievements, leadership, and service. Induction into academic honor societies also took place during the Convocation. Students, in addition to faculty members, were inducted into the Alpha Alpha Alpha Honor Society, which recognizes first generation college students.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program held a Career Fair with several alumni participants. Joshua Crawford ’25, Nicole Materkoski ’19, Michael Goldsberry ’13, Maddie Strope ’17, and Derek Yocke ’20 shared their expertise and information regarding job opportunities.

The Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners for the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) reaffirmed accreditation to the Wheeling University Business Department. Congratulations to Dr. Zahra Mohebbi, Department Chair of Business Programs, and the entire Business Department for their commitment to excellence. 

Admissions

A Student Orientation will be held on Saturday, May 12, for incoming students. Students will hear from Admission Representatives, faculty, and staff about campus life.

Advancement/Alumni

The Bishop Hodges Library now features a display of books written by Wheeling University alumni. Alumni can email alumni@wheeling.edu to learn about displaying their work.

The Alumni Weekend schedule and registration site are now available on the Alumni Weekend website. Alumni are currently making their reservations. We look forward to seeing you at Alumni Weekend.

Athletics

The 2nd Annual Wheeling Athletics Cardinal High Flyer Night was held to honor student athletes for their work on and off the field of competition. Click here to read more about this special night.

Campus Ministry

The University honored Pope Francis during a Memorial Mass at 12:10 p.m. on April 29 in the Chapel of Mary and Joseph. Students, faculty, alumni, and the greater community attended the Mass.

More than 20 students participated in the Spring Kairos Retreat at Lantz Farm. This retreat offers our students the opportunity to connect with God, themselves, and others.

Physical Plant

The Physical Plant staff are preparing the campus for the 2025 Commencement Ceremony on May 3.

Student Affairs

A variety of events took place to mark the week of Last Blast. Events included a party on Donahue Lawn, an Easter Egg Hunt, a bonfire, and a Senior Send Off in the RATT.

Students and employees showcased their musical talents during the Spring Concert held in the Recital Hall. A special thank you to Music Director Bob Troeger and student, Darrius Mason, for organizing the event.

Tina Tordella, Director of Counseling Services, held her final Wellness Wednesday of the year which focused on stress awareness.
