Wheeling University April Update

Dear Wheeling University Community,

On Thursday, April 30, Wheeling University celebrated The Most Reverend Mark E. Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, on the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. Remarks were given by Mr. David Hendrickson, Board Chair. During the event, the Prayer Wall was unveiled in the Chapel of Mary and Joseph by Father David Griffin, Director of Campus Ministry. The Prayer Wall was blessed by Bishop Brennan and he was honored that his name was the first selected.

Academics

The Wheeling University Education Department recently submitted its annual report to the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). This is a critical process that ensures the education program continues to meet rigorous national standards for educator preparation. The yearly report reflects the Education Department’s commitment to growth, continuous improvement, data-driven decision-making, and innovation to ensure that Wheeling University teacher and leadership candidates are fully prepared. Wheeling University is proud to share that the Education Department met all requirements and passed our yearly review, reaffirming the strength and quality of the Wheeling University Education Department.

The scholarly work of our students was highlighted during the 2026 Research Day and Scholarship Symposium. More than 70 students from multiple academic programs presented their research throughout the day. Click Here to read more.

Gerald Schroer, Jr., a member of the class of 1986, will be the speaker at the 2026 Commencement Ceremony on May 9. Schroer is the Chief Executive Officer of The Schroer Group, based in North Canton, Ohio. The ceremony will be live streamed on the Wheeling University website. Click Here to read more.

Admissions

Staff members from the Office of Admissions have been attending award ceremonies and college signing days at local high schools.

Tracy Depew has assumed the position as the Registrar for Wheeling University.

Advancement/Alumni

Alumni are making reservations for Alumni Weekend, which will be held June 12-14. All alumni are welcome to attend this special weekend. We will induct the class of 1976 into the 50 Year Club. This year marks five-year anniversaries for classes ending in 1 and 6.

Athletics

The Men’s Rugby team captured its third CRC National 7s Championship on Saturday, April 25. Congratulations to Coach Max Hamilton and the team members.

Bids for the stadium project have been received. Bids are being reviewed by the administration and the architects. 

Once again, the Athletic Department hung painted dog banners at the Fitzsimmons Family Dog Park.

Campus Ministry

During a beautiful Mass in the Chapel of Mary and Joseph, Father David Griffin, Director of Campus Ministry, welcomed two members of the campus community into the Catholic faith. The new members are Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Richardson and Director of Music Bob Troeger. Their families, along with students, coaches, alumni, and employees witnessed this special day.Click here to read more.

Physical Plant

The Physical Plant staff continue to make improvements throughout the campus facilities.

Student Services

About 200 students enjoyed a fun night during the Spring Ball held at River City Restaurant and Banquets in downtown Wheeling. 

During Last Blast Week, the University held a Student Appreciation Day to thank students for a great year. Students received frozen twin pops donated by the Ziegenfelder Company located in Wheeling.
