Wheeling University January Update

Dear Wheeling University Community,

The Spring 2026 semester started on Monday, January 12. Our students are settling into classes and campus activities. Most of all, they tell us they are happy and enjoy being back on campus.

Academics

More than 300 students were named to the Fall 2025 Dean’s List. To earn this honor, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and take at least 12 credit hours. To view the Dean’s List, click here.

The University welcomed the following new faculty members in January: 

·      Dr. Zachary Dehm, Assistant Professor of Theology

·      Madalyn Lyons, Instructor of Nursing

·      Richella Spielvogel, Instructor of Sports Management

·      Stephanie Vance, Instructor of Biology

Faculty from the Education Department offered professional development sessions for teachers in Ohio County Schools and Marshall County Schools. In early January, Cindy Burke, Assistant Professor, provided training on math strategies to teachers at Central Elementary in Marshall County and Shawna Safreed, Director of Education Programs, provided a session on AI to teachers at Ritchie Elementary in Ohio County.

Admissions

The Financial Aid Office is processing financial aid packages for Fall 2026 students.

Advancement

Renovations to Troy Theater are progressing thanks to the generosity of alumni, employees, and friends who purchased chairs. Click here to purchase a chair and become a sponsor. 

Athletics

Mike Geibel is returning to the coaching ranks and has been named as the head coach for the Cardinal Women’s Rugby team. He had previously coached the Cardinal Men’s Rugby team. To read more, click here.

Wheeling University is adding Women’s Wrestling which will begin competing in the 2026-27 academic year. The Cardinal program will be one of more than 90 women’s wrestling programs nationwide. To read more, click here.

Campus Ministry

The Sunday evening Mass in the Chapel of Mary and Joseph is offered for the health and well-being for a different Cardinal athletic team each week. Student-athletes of all faith affiliations are welcome to attend.

Physical Plant

The Physical Plant staff has been busy dealing with winter weather. A special thanks for keeping our students safe.

Student Affairs

Events to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were held on campus. The University hosted several events, including a viewing of the movie, Selma
