Wheeling University July Update

Dear Wheeling University Community,

The Most Reverend Evelio Menjivar-Ayala was installed as the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston on July 2, in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph. The faculty, staff, and students of Wheeling University look forward to the guidance he will provide. Welcome Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala!

Academics 

Doctor of Physical Therapy students presented their research to fellow students, faculty, and staff on July 2. The presentations are the culmination of more than two years of research on specific topics. Later that day, the class members received their White Coats. Click here to read more.

Additionally, the Doctor of Physical Therapy students participated in regional service-learning opportunities. The students spent four days serving the Ohio Valley at Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center, Family Services of the Upper Ohio Valley, the Weirton Christian Center, and the Seeing Hand Association. The students gained insights into the health care needs of Appalachia residents.

Faculty from the Interprofessional Education Committee attended and presented a research poster at the 21st International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences conference in Galway, Ireland. Participating in the conference were Dr. Melissa Bozovich, Assistant Professor of Athletic Training and Exercise Science and Director of the Master of Science of Athletic Training Program; Dr. Rhonda Haley, Director of DPT Clinical Education and Clinical Associate Professor of DPT; and Dr. Bryan Raudenbush, Professor of Physical Therapy and Psychology. Their research poster was titled, “Essential Processes and Materials for Designing an Interprofessional Education (IPE) Learning Experience: Assessment Outcomes and Resources for Implementation to Bridge Gaps in Health Care Providers.”

Admissions

Prospective students had the opportunity to learn more about Wheeling University at the Open Houses held at The Alpha Tavern in Wheeling and the St. Clair Bowling Lanes in St. Clairsville.  A special thanks to our community partners for hosting these events.

Advancement/Alumni

Mr. David Hendrickson, Board Chair, recently sent a letter to alumni to request their support. The gifts will enhance our efforts to provide our students with a high quality, Catholic education. 

Athletics

Three Wheeling University employees, Cameron Gibson, Director of Residence Life, Ben Healy, Head Track and Cross Country Coach, and Shawna Safreed, Director of Education Programs, were proud to participate in the Relay Across America movement. The relay was a nationwide initiative to unite communities through movement, service, and connection.

On July 31, members of our football team moved on campus and began practicing for the upcoming season on the newly renovated Bishop Schmitt Field. Other Fall teams will be arriving on campus during the next few weeks.

Campus Ministry

Father David Griffin, Director of Campus Ministry, was recognized by members of the St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on July 8. This year marks his 50 years of serving in the priesthood. He and other priests from the Archabbey were honored during the Jubilarian Day celebration. Kelly Klubert, Vice President for Advancement, and Chris Richardson, Men’s Basketball Coach, attended the Mass to celebrate this special occasion with Father David. Click here to read more.

Physical Plant

The members of the Physical Plant staff are preparing dorms and classrooms for the return of our students on Monday, August 24.

Student Affairs 

The 2026 Ohio Valley Athletic Conference All-Star Football Camp was held once again on the campus of Wheeling University during the week of July 13. Coaches, players, band members, queens, and cheerleaders participated in events that culminated with the Friday evening pep rally on Bishop Schmitt Field. 

Also, during the week of July 27, GenOn Ministries held its annual Youth Summit. This camp provides young people with the opportunity to grow in their faith and connection to God. 

Additionally, the St. Clairsville High School Band held its Band Camp on our campus.
