Wheeling University March Update

Dear Wheeling University Community,

Thank you to our generous donors for supporting the 2026 Cardinal Day of Giving. A total of 1,648 individuals made gifts totaling $361,382. All gifts will support scholarships, academic programs, campus ministry, athletic programs, and general operations at Wheeling University.

The State of the University Red and Gold Luncheon was held in the newly renovated Troy Theater on March 12. Gayle Manchin, Federal Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission, served as the guest speaker. University updates were given by Chad Carter, Chancellor of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, and David Hendrickson, Board of Trustees Chair. Robert Yahn, Engineering Department Chair, and students shared information about internships and service projects.  Closing remarks by Dr. Vargo focused on the University’s mission of life, leadership, and service.

Academics

The following staff members joined Wheeling University during the month of March:

Campus Ministry

More than 20 students participated in the Spring Kairos Retreat at Lantz Farm. Father David Griffin, Director of Campus Ministry, and Cameron Gibson, Director of Residence Life, along with student leaders led the retreat. The retreat offers our students the opportunity to connect with God, themselves, and others.

The University partnered with St. Michael Parish to host another talking session about Catholic social teaching and immigration. Our students and staff joined St. Michael’s parishioners to hear from Alex McKenna, Knights of Columbus, and Monsignor Paul Hudock who shared their experiences.

Physical Plant

The Physical Plant staff completed the renovation of Troy Theater. Employees and students had the chance to view the theater updates during this month’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by the touring group, The Rustic Mechanicals.

Student Affairs

The Wheeling University Safety Committee presented a session focusing on self-defense techniques. Faculty members Kevin Kettler and Dr. Lance Tarr engaged students and staff in selected defensive moves.

The Office of Student Affairs hosted the following activities:

  • St. Patrick’s Day Party in the RATT
  • Pickleball Tournament
  • Karaoke
  • March Madness Watch Party
  • Wheeling Nailers Hockey Game

As always, let me extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire Wheeling University Community for your support.
