Wheeling University Seniors Take Top Prize at State Athletic Training Competition
WHEELING, WV
Wheeling University’s Athletic Training team took top honors during the April 30 West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association Quiz Bowl.
The team, comprised of Candace Drzik (captain), Andres Da Silva Savino, and Troy McAuliff, competed against students in Athletic Training programs at Concord University, Marshall University, West Virginia University and West Virginia Wesleyan College. Due to the Coronavirus, this year’s state quiz bowl was done via video conferencing.
The competition, which was a Jeopardy-style format, where students were asked five questions from five practice domains. The domains covered during quiz bowl were: injury and illness prevention and wellness promotion; examination, assessment and diagnosis; immediate and emergency care; therapeutic intervention; and health care administration and professional responsibility.
“I could not be prouder of the students for winning the competition. These seniors have been dedicated to their studies and professional goals during their time at the University. They have represented Wheeling University very well, and I look forward to their next competition in a couple of weeks,” said Dave Dennis, Associate Professor of Athletic Training and Program Director.
“Once again, Wheeling University students live our mission to excel in their field of study. Their commitment to learning continues to bring them regional recognition. I am proud of these students for their achievements, and I wish them success at their upcoming competition and as they begin their professional careers,” said Wheeling University President Ginny R. Favede.
The Wheeling University team will compete on Friday, May 15 in the District 3, Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association competition, which will include state winners from Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The winners of the 10 district matches will continue onto the national quiz bowl, which is scheduled for June.
