Liturgical Ministry

Liturgy at Wheeling University is the center of our community of faith, when we, the diverse parts of Christ’s Body, gather as one to celebrate the good news of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ. The liturgy gives us life and challenges us to live our faith more deeply. In addition to active participation as a member of the worshipping Body, there are several opportunities to serve the faith community in liturgies:

The Altar Server helps with set-up and clean-up in the Chapel and assists the Presider throughout the Liturgy.

The Sacristan ensures all is ready for liturgy, oversees the other Liturgical Ministers, monitors the soundboard during liturgy, and ensures all is cleared afterward.

The Lector proclaims the Word of God and the Prayers of the Faithful.

The Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist administers the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood to the assembly.

Please note: All Liturgical Ministers must attend a Training session and Commissioning in the Fall, an Evening of Reflection in the Spring, and occasional other formation events. Anyone interested in one or several of these roles should contact Jamey Brogan, Director of Campus Ministry, in Swint 207 at 304-243-2168 or email jbrogan@wheeling.edu

Choir Members and Musicians lead the congregation in song. In addition to voice and piano, the Music Ministry program includes various other instruments that contribute to a liturgy both contemporary and grounded in the tradition of the Church.

The Choir Director leads the choir at practice and liturgy and helps to select music.

If you are interested in offering your vocal or instrumental talents, please contact Robert Troeger, Director of Music Ministry, at 304-243-2249 or email rtroeger@wheeling.edu.
