Update from the President

Dear Wheeling University Community,

March may have come in like a lamb weather-wise, but around campus, the start of the new month has been busy with classes, learning programs, mid-terms, and sporting events. So how could we be halfway through this semester already?

We are getting ready to welcome our next class of Cardinals to campus! We will host the first of three Cardinal Orientations Saturday, April 23. Prospective students will be receiving an email today with all the details and how to register. The orientation provides those students who have deposited an opportunity to visit campus, meet with their faculty advisor, and complete their fall class schedule. Also, these new Cardinals will have the chance to meet future classmates, talk with current students during a panel discussion, obtain housing information, Cardinal ID card, and meet with financial aid to finalize their package. Do not miss this chance to meet Iggy and have your photo taken with our mascot! Attending this early orientation allows students a jump start on beginning their Wheeling University careers! Anyone with questions about the April orientation can call 304-243-2359 or email admiss@wheeling.edu.

We repeat time and time again that Wheeling University’s students actively live our mission in the work they do on behalf of our University. This month, thanks to the efforts of Matthew Greenwood, a graduate assistant for the Business Department, Wheeling University will host a Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18, in Troy Theater. This is an opportunity for our students to find employment or internships from local businesses and organizations. Matt has several businesses and organizations signed up to participate, but there is certainly room for more. Any alumni or friends who would like to set up a table at the far can contact Matt at mgreenwood341@cardinal.wheeling.edu to find out more. This is a wonderful project that Matt is organizing. It will benefit both our students and the local business community.

Before the start of the Mountain East Conference Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, the conference announced its yearly awards. Three Cardinals were honored this year by the MEC. Lady Cardinal Lauren Calhoun was named to the All-MEC First Team. Lauren was the MEC scoring leader with 507 points during the regular season. In addition, two members of the men’s team –Jordan Reid and Jarett Haines – were chosen All-MEC Second Team selections. This year, these two seniors ranked among the top 10 scorers in the conference, which saw both surpass the 1,000 point milestone. Congratulations to these three student-athletes on their awards!

As part of the MEC Basketball Tournament, held again this year at Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena, the University set up a Wheeling University Admission’s table. What is notable about our display is that alumni, faculty, and staff have been staffing the table and helping to promote Wheeling University to prospective students and parents who are attending the tournament. I am grateful to each person who has or is taking time out of their schedule to advance our institution. Once again, members of this Cardinal Family show they are willing to help – their service to our university is a true blessing.

After Ash Wednesday’s Noon Mass, Fr. Hadi Sasmita blessed our Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Richardson just hours before their first game of the MEC Tournament. The Cardinals went on to a great win against Glenville State that evening. Since the team won after the blessing on Wednesday, Chris decided to visit Fr. Hadi again before tonight’s game. Coach Richardson received a double blessing from Fr. Hadi and Fr. Conroy, who blessed and prayed with Chris. It was touching and truly represents who we are, and the mission of leading lives for and among others our Wheeling community is committed to.

Next week marks Spring Break. While our faculty will be busy grading mid-terms and papers, many of our students will travel for sports competitions, head home, or go to a warmer climate with friends. For our athletes and coaches playing next week – good luck! May you use the break to recharge our students, taking time away. No matter the destination, we pray that everyone will be able to make it where they need to go safely.

With gratitude,

Ginny R. Favede, President
Wheeling University
