Student Success Center
At the Student Success Center, we’re here to help! From the little things to the big things, the Student Success Center (SSC), strives to ensure the success of Wheeling University students. Faculty, staff, and students work collaboratively to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where students can enhance their academic, professional, and personal development.
Through the First Year Seminar program, peer tutoring, career services, Success Sessions, the Early Alert Retention Program, and access to an array of campus resources, the SSC works to serve as a “one stop shop” for all student needs. Find academic assistance, general guidance, or even sometimes a cup of coffee and a quiet place to study. You can also find computers, private study areas, group study rooms, and plenty of resources at the front desk to help you meet your academic goals.
For students, if you would like to schedule an appointment with the Director of Student Success to discuss how to get back on track to reach your academic goals, you can book an appointment any time by emailing Emmanuel Awotula at eawotula@wheeling.edu.
Help Desk
We’re here to help, and it starts when you first walk in. Through collaboration with other campus departments, students, and faculty, at the front desk we provide an array of resources both on- and off-campus. Flyers for campus events, applications for campus clubs, directions to the nearest place to eat – we’ve got it all. Stop at the help desk and we can have someone walk you to class, explain canvas, or assist with many other issues we know you often face. We will answer when we can, and refer you when we can’t. Either way, we will direct you to the right place.
Staff, faculty, and students – have something important you want to share? Please send any information/resources to Emmanuel Awotula, Director of Student Success eawotula@wheeling.edu or drop off at the Student Success Center.
Peer Tutoring
The peer tutors at Wheeling University provide more than just academic assistance. They provide resources, encouragement, and direction to help students they assist become independent learners. You can have recurring meetings each week with your peer tutor, or schedule as needed. Please visit the link below to view available courses. Should you need assistance with a course not listed, please contact eawotula@wheeling.edu, and we will work to provide the tutoring you need. Faculty can require a peer tutoring lesson and request a session report from the Student Success Center. It is the responsibility of the student to request a signed session report prior to leaving the SSC.
Success Sessions
Our success sessions act in a similar way as peer tutoring. Success sessions can be things like time management, note-taking skills, preparing for presentations, and more. Choose an area you might need assistance with, schedule an appointment, and our student success coaches will work with you on honing in on these skills to enhance success. Like peer tutoring, faculty members can refer students to the Success Center if they identify an area needing improvement. If needed, students can also request a session report for Success Sessions. If there is an area you would like to work on, but you don’t see it listed here, please forward all suggestions to eawotula@wheeling.edu.
Writing Center
The writing center is a quiet area designated for students to write papers, review resources for writing, and by request, receive writing assistance from a peer tutor. Students can help each other in editing papers, and faculty members can require students to visit the writing center for projects. There will also be a peer tutor available during scheduled walk-in hours each week.
First Year Seminar
The Director of Student Success is the coordinator for the First Year Seminar (FYS). FYS is a one-credit course designed to help students transition from high school to college, strengthen the basic skills they will need to succeed, and create bonds with others in the campus community. There are four sections of FYS with approximately 15-20 students in each section. All sections are co-taught by a peer instructor, along with a faculty member or an administrator. The FYS class also introduces students to a variety of guest speakers, ranging from campus ministry and library services to mental health, students will be well-informed about available campus resources.
