Update from the President
Dear Wheeling University Community,
The University took the opportunity this week to induct six students into Sigma Beta Delta. This international honor society recognizes the accomplishments of students who major in business, management, and administration. During a ceremony Thursday afternoon, Brooke Briggs, Chandler Rhodes, Kyle Dalton, Rilei Levesque, Scott Kondroik and faculty member Dr. Zahra Mohebbi were inducted into Sigma Beta Delta. It was wonderful to see faculty, friends and family at the ceremony celebrating the achievements of these new members. Congratulations to each of you on this honorable recognition!
It is time once again for our annual campus beautification day – Laudato Si´ – which will be held Friday, April 28th. This day provides students and employees a chance to come together as a community to spruce up the campus ahead of Commencement. The day will begin outside of Donahue Hall at 9:00 a.m. Following our morning of work, all those who participated will gather at 1 p.m. for a cookout and group photo on Donahue Lawn. And, once again, all those who come out to serve that day will receive a Laudato Si’ 2023 t-shirt! I encourage all members of the community to take time next Friday to participate in this day of team building and community service! What a wonderful way to live out our mission to serve others then by volunteering right here at HOME.
I would like to remind those undergraduate and graduate students who are participating in Commencement to please make sure to take care of your graduation fee as soon as possible by visiting the Academic Affairs Office located in CET Room 216. Also, all undergraduate and graduate students are reminded that you are to attend the Honors Convocation, which will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, May 4 in Troy Theater. This is a time when we recognize our students for their academic achievements. I always look forward to this opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our students during this very special event.
The Cardinal Rugby team will be competing in the National Collegiate Rugby Championship tournament next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, MD. On Thursday, April 27th from 5:30 to 8 p.m., the Friends of Wheeling Rugby alumni group is hosting a meet the team event at Ted’s Montana Grill, in Gaithersburg, MD. The event is open to all Wheeling alumni and friends. If you plan to attend, please email sticktx@comcast.net to make a reservation. A complete schedule, with game times, can be found on the tournament’s website – the Cardinals will compete in the Division 1 Premier category. I hope all Wheeling alumni in the Washington, D.C. area will come to watch the team and cheer the Cardinals onto a national title next weekend. Good Luck Cards!
Finally, as the semester draws to a close and with exams about to begin, we will once again host a Late Night Breakfast at 9 p.m. Monday, May 1 in the Benedum Room. This is a favorite event among our students. This time-honored tradition wouldn’t be possible without help from our faculty, staff, and volunteers. Those interested in helping that evening, please contact Christy Nieman in Student Services at 304-243-2350 or cnieman@wheeling.edu. I cannot wait to see everyone for Late Night Breakfast!
Please pray for everyone at Wheeling University and ask God to give us strength as we head into the final weeks of this academic year. There is some much happening, so stay focused Cardinals as you prepare for finals exams, write papers, and complete assignments. And don’t forget to take time to relax and enjoy the sunshine!
With deep appreciation,
Ginny R. Favede
