Update from the President

Dear Cardinal Community,

June has arrived and it looks to be a busy month for the Wheeling University community.

Our next New Student Orientation is scheduled for Monday, June 12th when we will welcome 50 new Cardinals that day. The students will spend the day learning the ins and outs of Wheeling University. We have information sessions planned for the students and their families, including sessions with Faculty, Financial Aid, Information Technology, Student Support Services, Residence Life, and Academic Affairs. We cannot wait to greet each of these Cardinals and welcome them to the Wheeling family.

Alumni Weekend is just three weeks away, so do not forget to make your reservations before the June 16th cutoff. We have a full slate of activities planned for our alumni – the complete list of events, along with those attending, and the online registration portal can be found on the Wheeling University webpage. Next week we will announce the recipients of the Distinguished, Lewis and O’Brien awards.

Make sure to tune in and cheer on Wheeling alumnus Haywood Highsmith and his Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Game 2 of the series is set for 8 p.m. Sunday and will be broadcast on the ABC network. This community is proud of Haywood – he had several outstanding games during the Eastern Conference Finals. We hope he and his teammates bring home the title!

Last weekend, Wheeling lost Al Castilow, a member of the co-founding class of 1959. He and his wife Catherine left a lasting legacy at the University, an endowed scholarship. The scholarship benefits incoming freshmen who are U.S. military veterans or children of veterans, who plan to major in one of the sciences at Wheeling. This University will be forever grateful to he and his wife for providing this financial assistance to future Wheeling students. We are saddened by Mr. Castilow’s passing and offer our deepest sympathies to their family.

Employees, please circle Sunday, July 23rd on your calendars. That is the date of our annual Employee Picnic, which will be held this year at Oglebay’s Wagon Shed Shelter. There will be plenty of great food and all those who attend will receive a wristband, which allows them entry, free of charge, to the Good Zoo, miniature golf, the paddle boats, the par 3 golf course, and swimming at the outdoor pool. Unfortunately, golf at the 18-hole courses is not included. I will send information soon on how employees can sign up.

A recent fall has caused some health issues for our Interim VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jackie McGlade. Please keep Dr. Jackie in your prayers as she recovers. I send a very special thank you to Christy Nieman, Administrative Assistant, Student Services for rushing to Dr. Jackie’s rescue and delivering her to the emergency room. Our mission isn’t just something we teach our students; it is extraordinary to recognize employees like Christy, living for others and going above and beyond to serve.

Two quick reminders. The University is operating under Summer hours, which are Monday – Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. All offices are closed on Friday. Also, Aladdin will not be serving meals next week. The Benedum Room will reopen the week of June 12th.

As we begin another weekend, I would like to take a moment to thank the Wheeling University family – employees, alumni, and friends – for their continued support. Thanks to your support of OUR University, we are able to provide students a quality, Catholic education.

With gratitude

Ginny R. Favede
President, Wheeling University
