Update from the President

Campus Communications
July 10

Dear Wheeling University Community,

As we prepare to re-open campus for in-person learning for the Fall semester, there is much time and effort going into how Wheeling University can reduce the risk of COVID-19. Our Re-Opening Committee continues to meet and finalize plans that can be easily modified if national, state and local guidelines change.

This week, the number of COVID-19 cases have increased in West Virginia. We are mindful of your concerns, and I want you to know that our re-opening plan has, at its core, one goal – to ensure the health and safety of our students, faculty and employees. The Re-Opening Committee has been focused on developing a detailed plan for the opening of the Fall 2020 semester. The plan will include all safety and operational measures we are implementing. Once complete, the plan will be posted on our COVID-19 website, and will be shared with all members of our community.

Last week, I shared our plan for social distancing for the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Ceremony. At this time the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is now recommending that all graduates, faculty, participants and spectators wear face coverings during both events. Face masks will be available and will be distributed to everyone as they enter Bishop Schmitt Field.

I am thrilled to share that the cross has been refurbished and returned to its perch atop the bell tower near the Chapel of Mary and Joseph. Prior to the re-installation, members of the Wheeling University community gathered near the Chapel as Fr. James Conroy, S.J., rector of the Jesuit Community, blessed the cross and share how the cross is a symbol of rebirth. I would like to thank our maintenance workers for all of their restoration work and Charlie Savage, of Savage Construction, for donating the crane and workers to remove and replace this symbol of our faith.

Part Two of the 50 Year Club Lecture Series, “This Land is Home to Me” will be presented on July 23.  Fr. Richard McCouch, S.J. will lead members of the University’s 50 Year Club through this virtual presentation. Details for this lecture will be emailed to alumni from the classes of 1959 – 1972. I hope you can join Fr. McCouch for this special event.

These uncertain times require unprecedented actions. With continued diligence and adherence to recommended safety guidelines, I believe we will emerge from this pandemic stronger and more united than ever before. I wish to extend my thanks to this Wheeling University family, who is working intensely to prepare for the start of the Fall Semester and the return of our students to campus. As always, I pray that you and your loved ones remain safe and healthy.

With Gratitude,

Ginny R. Favede
