The Student Success Center (SSC), strives to ensure the success of Wheeling University students. Faculty, staff, and students work collaboratively to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where students can enhance their academic, professional, and personal development.
Through the First Year Seminar program, peer tutoring, career services, Success Sessions, the Early Alert Retention Program, and access to an array of campus resources, the SSC works to serve as a “one stop shop” for all student needs. Find academic assistance, general guidance, computers, private study areas, group study rooms, and resources at the front desk to help you meet your academic goals.
Peer Tutoring
The peer tutors at Wheeling University provide more than just academic assistance. They provide resources, encouragement, and direction to help students become independent learners. You can have recurring meetings each week with your peer tutor, or schedule appointments as needed. Faculty can require a peer tutoring lesson and request a session report from the Student Success Center. It is the responsibility of the student to request a signed session report prior to leaving the SSC.
Success Sessions
Our success sessions act in a similar way as peer tutoring. Success sessions cover topics such as time management, note-taking skills, presentations, and more. Choose an area you might need assistance with, schedule an appointment, and we will work with you on honing in on these skills to enhance success. Like peer tutoring, faculty members can refer students to the Success Center if they identify an area needing improvement. If needed, students can also request a session report for Success Sessions.
First Year Seminar
The Director of Student Success is the coordinator for the First Year Seminar (FYS). FYS is a one-credit course designed to help students transition from high school to college, strengthen the basic skills they will need to succeed, and create bonds with others in the campus community. The FYS class also introduces students to a variety of guest speakers, ranging from campus ministry and library services to mental health, students will be well-informed about available campus resources.
