Update from the President

Dear Wheeling University Family,

Today, alumni from across the country came to campus for Alumni Weekend 2023. It was amazing to watch as they greeted one another with hugs – Wheeling alumni are truly a family! This evening’s events were wonderful, highlighted by the Class of 1973’s induction into the 50 Year Club. The 50th class had the most attendees for the weekend – a special thank you to Fred Hess, Alfreda Antonucci, and Diane Delisio who contacted classmates. The Class of 1963 gathered to celebrate 60 years since graduating thanks to the efforts of Ron Vogrin.  After dinner, many folks congregated in the Ratt to listen to Gregg Molnar on the guitar, and they continued to reminisce about their college days. I look forward to Saturday events including a presentation by three members of the Class of 1973 and of course, the Alumni Awards and Recognition Dinner. More hugs, and maybe some tears, will be shared on Sunday when our alumni say goodbye to one another before heading for home. One of the best parts of this weekend is getting the chance to meet more members of the Wheeling family! I would be remiss if I did not offer my thanks to everyone who had a hand in making Alumni Weekend happen. I extend my sincere gratitude to those individuals and departments who were involved in the planning and execution of the many activities that make up Alumni Weekend. We hope our alumni will return to campus for Homecoming and Family Weekend which is scheduled for October 6-7.

The Cardinal Football team will host the Friday Nights Lights Camp Friday, June 30th.  The football skills camp is open to players in grades 9-12 and will be held on Bishop Schmitt Field. The cost is $35 for those that pre-register and $40 for those who pay the night of the camp. To learn more about the camp and to register, click here.

The campus is gearing up for the OVAC All-Star Football Camp, which begins July 17th. This camp will be the largest summer event held on our campus again this year. We will house all of the football players from Ohio and West Virginia, the coaching staff, members of the All-Star Band, and the band directors. Throughout the week, the football teams and band will be using our facilities to practice for the game which will be held Saturday, July 22nd at Wheeling Island Stadium. The final preparations are underway and we look forward to welcoming these young men and women to campus next month.

Admissions and Student Services have added an additional New Student Orientation to the schedule – which will be held Saturday, July 29th. We still have many of our incoming students who were unable to attend one of the three previous orientations. Our New Student Orientations are important because they help better prepare the students and their families to start the semester when they arrive in August. Once again, the Admissions team is still accepting incoming and transfer students for the 2023-24 academic year.

St. Michael’s Parish and its Pastor, Fr. Carlos Melocoton, will host the Second Annual Back to School Pig Roast on Saturday, August 26th. I am so grateful to Fr. Carlos and his parishioners who sponsor this event and use it to welcome our incoming class to the greater Wheeling community. Last year, the students loved this picnic and the chance to meet so many wonderful men and women from the parish.

TWO IMPORTANT REMINDERS!

This Sunday’s Mass will be held at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. The Summer Mass time of 10 a.m. will resume on July 1.

We return to our Summer Work Hours on Monday. Offices will be open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with all University departments closed on Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend!
