Update from the President
Dear Wheeling University Community,
The semester is in full swing, and I am happy to tell you we have welcomed several new employees to our Cardinal Family. Over the Summer Erica Christman and Cameron Russell joined our Enrollment Management team and have been assisting with the incoming Fall class and have now turned their focus to recruiting next year’s class. We have four new staff in the University’s Business and Finance Office. Patrick Massey and Heather Wilson are serving as accountants, Tracy Jenkins is the Coordinator of Student Accounts and Jada Barker is the department’s administrative assistant. Trey Jeter is overseeing the Bishop Hodges Library.
As a follow-up to last week’s report on the Ignatius Hall elevator, I learned from Mr. Price, our facilities director, that Schindler Elevator had installed new parts as reported, but unfortunately, this did not correct the problem. The company, after the initial repairs were made, found a faulty encoder and some bad wiring. Due to the age of the elevator system, finding parts is difficult. Mr. Price said after an extensive nationwide search, Schindler was able to find the necessary equipment to fix one elevator. We are waiting for the parts to arrive so the Schindler technicians can make these repairs, which the company estimates will take three days. I will continue to keep everyone updated on this situation.
The Admissions team has a full slate of open houses planned for this Fall – with the first to be held on Saturday, September 23rd. Prospective students and their families will learn more about Wheeling University, with sessions planned to cover Financial Aid processes, Academic programs, a panel discussion, a campus tour, and a tailgate lunch near Bishop Schmitt Field during the Wheeling-Concord Football game. We look forward to welcoming prospective students, introducing them to our faculty/staff, and showing them our campus. Anyone interested in attending the upcoming Fall Open House can register by clicking this link.
Chris Baker, HR Generalist, has been named the Title IX Coordinator, replacing the interim coordinator. Carrie Hanna, Director of Athletics, will continue to serve as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
Wheeling University’s Homecoming and Family Weekend celebration returns to campus October 7-9. The event combines activities to include current students and family members and old friends and classmates in the weekend festivities. As part of traditional Homecoming events, all are invited to join us for Wheeling Homecoming & Family Weekend Red Zone Tailgate from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, in the end zone located at Bishop Schmitt Field’s scoreboard before the football game. The tailgate will feature Eggs & Kegs, live music with the Easy Street Band, a Corn Hole Tournament, and Mason Dixon BBQ’s food truck. Alumni, friends, and family will have the opportunity to enjoy a Meet & Greet with all our athletic teams by visiting their team tents. Children can enjoy inflatables and more. Game time is 1 p.m. as the Cardinals take on West Virginia Wesleyan. The half-time festivities will include the crowning of the Wheeling University 2023 Homecoming King and Queen. If you are planning to attend, please make your reservations soon. A full schedule of events and online reservation form can be found online.
Our Cardinal teams – Volleyball, Rugby, Men’s Soccer, and Women’s Soccer – will play at home this weekend. Stop by Bishop Schmitt Field or the McDonough Center, and cheer our teams onto victory on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend schedule and times can be found here.
Have a relaxing and pleasant weekend everyone!
With Gratitude,
Ginny R. Favede
