Wheeling Jesuit University announces schedule for spring Lecture Series

Wheeling Jesuit University has announced the schedule for the spring 2019 Lecture Series, which includes a total of seven lectures that will feature a variety of events and topics. All of the events will take place on WJU’s campus.
The first event, which was held last night, was an interactive panel discussion that focused on the opportunities and challenges facing men and women seeking employment after incarceration or drug rehabilitation. The panel, “Just Work,” consisted of four female leaders from different fields including government, prisons, social services and business. The lecture was sponsored by Wheeling Jesuit’s Appalachian Institute.
The next lecture is a three-part event, “Saints & Heroes Lenten Lecture Series,” that will take place on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Educational Technologies (CET) Recital Hall. This talk will discuss the significance of different concepts of power and responsibility at work in the lives of saints and heroes, and the ways that power is not necessarily a prerequisite to but rather an outcome of our responsiveness to the needs of others.
The third event will be a film screening with Director John Miller on Monday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the CET Recital Hall. There will be a screening and discussion of the documentary “Moundsville,” which depicts the economic and social changes impacting America through the perspectives of the residents of a small, local, rust-belt Appalachian city.
The second part of the “Saints & Heroes Lenten Lecture Series” will take place on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in the CET Recital Hall. This talk will compare and contrast saints, heroes, sinners and villains in light of both the Christian tradition and popular entertainment — particularly superheroes, Harry Potter and Star Wars. The third installment of this series will wrap up on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in the CET Recital Hall and will focus on how people understand the life of Jesus in light of its apparently disastrous end on the cross and ask how his approach to death should shape the understanding of discipleship.
On Thursday, April 11, there will be a lecture given by Aimee Murphy, executive director of Rehumanize International, titled “Exploring the Relationship of Sexual Assault and Abortion on College Campuses.” This talk is at 7 p.m. in the CET Recital Hall. Murphy will discuss the ways in which a culture of rape and sexual assault on college campuses is related to the issue of abortion.
The last event of the series will take place on Wednesday, April 24 from 5-7 p.m. in the Benedum Room, “Celebrate Appalachia Dinner.” This event is sponsored by WJU’s Appalachian Institute and will include Appalachian food, crafts and a bluegrass concert.
