Update from the President

Dear Cardinals,

The semester is well underway and our faculty are lecturing, making assignments, and giving tests.  Our students have settled back into the hustle and bustle of campus life. While Commencement may seem to be far away, it is time for students planning to graduate in May to start the process. Any undergraduate or graduate student who plans to graduate in May must complete a graduation application.  This form notifies the Registrar’s Office of your intent to graduate, participate in Commencement, and provides the information needed for a diploma. I encourage all students who plan to graduate in May to complete this form as soon as possible.

Each Spring, students, faculty, and staff of the University hold a beautification day – Laudato Si’ – to spruce up the campus in advance of Commencement. I ask everyone to circle Friday, April 28th on their calendars, and plan to join other members of the campus to live the mission by performing service here at home. As a community, we join together to clean up the after-effects of the Winter season –painting curbs, collecting trash/leaves, power washing sidewalks, and trimming bushes/tree limbs. This day of service, named in honor of Pope Francis’ encyclical, is an opportunity for all of us to follow the Holy See’s call to ‘care for our common home.’ Following a morning of work, all volunteers will gather to reflect and enjoy a community luncheon. I will continue to provide updates as the date approaches.

As a reminder, I would like to share our weekly Mass schedule at the Chapel of Mary and Joseph. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday daily Mass is held at 12:10 p.m. On Wednesday a vigil Mass is held at 9 p.m. Two Masses are held each Sunday – 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

This week, women’s basketball player Lauren Calhoun joined the Cardinal 1000 Point Club. Wednesday night entering the game against Notre Dame College, Lauren needed just 17 points to reach this prestigious mark. She netted her 1,000 point after grabbing a rebound under the bucket and banked in a shot with about four minutes left in the first half of the game. Those in attendance took the opportunity to recognize Lauren during a time-out. Lauren is the 29th women’s player to reach this historic feat. We congratulate Lauren on this accomplishment and wish her and the team continued success throughout the rest of the basketball season.

Saturday, our Cardinal basketball teams take on the Hilltoppers inside the McDonough Center. I encourage anyone planning to attend the games to purchase tickets in advance online to ensure they have a seat for what could be a sellout crowd. If you cannot make Saturday’s game in person, you can watch all the action on the MEC TV online link.  The Athletic Hall of Fame class induction ceremony planned for Saturday has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts. Once a new date is set, I will share the date and the names of those individuals who make up the 2023 Athletic Hall of Fame class.

I look forward to an exciting Cardinal and Hilltopper rival game!  It’s always wonderful to reflect on the relationship both teams have in the community.

Have a great weekend and GO CARDS!
