International Student FAQs

+ Am I considered an international student?
Wheeling University defines an international student as someone who is a permanent resident or citizen of a country other than the United States, and who requires immigration documents in order to study in the U.S.

+ What are your academic requirements?
Below are the requirements for International student admissions:

  • Secondary school GPA of 2.75
  • If English is your native language, WU requires a 940 SAT or higher (verbal and math) or an ACT composite score of 20 or above
  • If English is not your native language, WU can accept a TOEFL or IELTS in lieu of the SAT or ACT or DET. Wheeling University requires a TOEFL score of 80 iBT, 213 on the computer-based test, or 550 on the paper-based test. WU also accepts an IELTS score of a 6 or higher or at least 105 on the DET.

+ Do you accept electronic copies of my documents?
WU accepts electronic copies of official documents during the initial application process. However, physical official documents are required before or when you arrive on campus.

+ Do you offer financial aid to international students?
Yes, Wheeling University offers financial aid to international students. Financial aid for international students is packaged automatically and there are no extra forms to complete unless you receive athletic scholarships or are applying for competitive scholarships.

+ Can I get a job on campus?
International students are permitted to work on campus. Wheeling University does provide employment opportunity to international students in the Appalachian Institute, Campus Ministry and Aladdin, Wheeling’s food service provider, but the opportunities are very scarce. Please do not rely on campus employment as a source of funding for your education.

+ What should I bring with me to campus?

+ What is the weather like in Wheeling?
Wheeling experiences all of four seasons. Typically, the coldest month of the year is January with an average temperature of 38˚F (3.4˚C). The warmest month of the year is usually July with an average temperature of 85˚F (29.4˚C). Make sure to pack your clothes accordingly. Local retail shops are near-by if you need to purchase weather appropriate items.
