Update from the President

Dear Cardinal Family,

A new month brings more great news about our students and academic programs! I am pleased to share with you that 189 students have been honored for their academic achievements throughout the fall 2022 semester.  Today the President’s List was released recognizing these high-achieving students for their academic excellence.  To qualify for the list, a student must be enrolled full-time taking a minimum of 12 credit hours, and maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average for the semester. I am very proud of these young men and women who achieved this distinction.  Their diligent work and commitment to academics are exceptional. The President’s List can be viewed online.

Our Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program was chosen among the 10 best in the country by Nurse Practitioner Online.com. Wheeling’s FNP program was selected as the sixth best in the United States and was the only program in the region to receive this recognition. This ranking is a tribute to our faculty who teach students all of the necessary skills and concepts to be successful once they complete their degree. This program is offered online allowing nurses to continue working while seeking an advanced degree. You can read more about the program’s recognition online.

Wheeling University is hosting a number of educational and fun activities throughout February in celebration of Black History Month. The Campus Activities Office and the Black Student Union will hold a Black History Trivia night, a Poetry Slam, a Hot Takes Debate, and a Black History Month-themed t-shirt giveaway at the Feb. 18th basketball game. The Director of the Counseling Center, Tina Tordella has a display of notable Black mental health pioneers and advocates who helped pave the way for those that came after them. The board illustrates each one’s contribution throughout history. Our friends at Aladdin Food Service will host a number of themed meals planned for students and employees to enjoy throughout February – check out the online menu to see what the chef has planned for the month! These events are a great way to learn more about Black History, so I encourage all of our students to participate in the activities!

With Commencement three months away, all undergraduate or graduate students who plan to graduate in May must complete a graduation application.  This form notifies the Registrar’s Office of your intent to graduate, participate in Commencement, and provides the information needed for a diploma. I encourage all students who plan to graduate in May to complete this form as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, feel free to stop by the Registrar’s Office or email the office at registrar@wheeling.edu.

We have opened registration for Alumni Weekend 2023. The schedule of events and the registration site are now available on the Wheeling University website. Spread the word with your classmates and make your plans to return home June 23-25 for a great weekend with your friends and classmates!

Finally, our annual Employee Picnic held in July has been moved to a new date and location. Originally scheduled for July 8th at Wheeling Park, the picnic has been moved to Sunday, July 25 at Oglebay Park. Oglebay Park offers our employees and their families the chance to enjoy many activities including the Good Zoo, paddle boats, miniature and par 3 golf, swimming at the outdoor pool, and other attractions. The picnic will be held at Wagon Shed Shelter, which is located near Schenk Lake. Additional details, including start time and how to make a reservation, will be shared soon. I hope all of our employees will circle this date on the calendar and come enjoy great food, beverages, and a fun-filled day with other members of the Cardinal Family!

With the bitterly cold weather back again, Cardinal fans who cannot make it to the McDonough Center might want to curl up under a warm blanket at home to watch our men’s and women’s teams take on WV State on Saturday. Both games will be streamed live and can be viewed on your smart device.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and Go Cards!

Ginny R. Favede
President, Wheeling University
