Update from the President

Dear Wheeling University Community,

It is hard to believe that the semester is half over! Many of our students are heading home for a long weekend, as they are off Monday and Tuesday for Fall Break. This semester is certainly flying by!

This weekend our Admissions Team will welcome many prospective students and their families to campus on Saturday for our second Fall Open House of the year. We look forward to meeting these students and offering them an overview of how Wheeling University can help them achieve academic success. There will be a special session by Admissions, Financial Aid will offer insights about scholarships available/filling out a FAFSA, members of the faculty will talk about the academic programs and there will be a tour of campus. I hope each of these families enjoy their visit and find they would like to become a part of the Wheeling University family.

Wheeling University was named the best college or university in West Virginia by the online ranking service, WalletHub. The online service named the top 10 institutions in the state, with Wheeling at the top of the list – outscoring WVU and Marshall. WalletHub looked at 30 variables in seven specific categories that are important to families when they are choosing a college. This is the second time this Fall that our University has received high marks from a national-ranking service. Last month, Wheeling was named a top-tier Regional University-South by U.S. News & World Report. Such rankings reaffirm that we are providing students with a quality education that is grounded in mission.

I am happy to announce that Gage Bradshaw, who has been serving as the interim Head Coach of the Lacrosse team since 2022, has been named the team’s head coach. Since taking over the leadership of the team, Gage has continued to grow the program. Last year his Cardinals finished with the most wins in a season since 2018. He brought in 12 new players this year and I am excited to see what strides the squad makes when they take the field during the 2024 season. I wish Gage and his players continued success!

Again, this year, the University will pray for the deceased on All Souls Day and throughout the month of November. All Souls Day is a day for commemoration of all the faithful departed and to honor them for their fidelity in life. Alumni, employees, and students can submit names of deceased family members to be included in these prayer intentions to camp-min@wheeling.edu or mail them to Wheeling University, Campus Ministry, 316 Washington Ave., Wheeling, WV 26003. All names submitted will be placed in a basket inside the Chapel of Mary and Joseph. Fr. Freddie will pray for these individuals during each of the Masses throughout the month.

Our Director of Dining Noah Fraley is asking students to please take a quick survey – “Student Dish on Dining Survey” – to help Aladdin Food Service understand what students want. Students can click here to take the survey which is open until October 31. I encourage our students to complete the survey, which will take just a few minutes. Your feedback is important!

With Fall Break starting today, the Benedum Room will have special hours for the next four days. Brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., while dinner hours will be from 4:45 to 7:30 p.m. Also, the Coffee Shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6:15 during the break. Normal dining and coffee shop hours will resume on Wednesday, October 25th.

Fall break is here and I wish our students a restful and relaxing time away from the classroom. May each of you have safe travels and return to campus next week ready to finish the semester strong!

With deep gratitude,
